Tampa Bay Rays

The Rays are currently in the box seat for AL East and top of the AL East power rankings. They have enjoyed another great season after making it to the World Series in 2020. With a current 88-52 record and a .629 average, they do seem to be the best side in their division. This would suggest that they may have enough to hold the Red Sox and Yankees off as the regular season closes.

The Nelson Cruz trade looks to have injected fresh life into their campaign and enabled them to carry on performing well. Although he might not have played that amazingly, his experience seems to have helped people such as Wander Franco blossom. Splitting a four-game series with Boston recently has helped keep their momentum going, as did taking two games from three against the Twins recently. With seven games against the poorly performing Tigers in the next few weeks, you have to rank them highly in current power ratings.

Boston Red Sox

To see the Red Sox breathing down the Rays necks in AL East has surprised some people. Not too much was expected from Boston pre-season and their slow start did not change this. Since then though, they have really picked up and showed dominant hitting/pitching to notch an 80-62 record.

Their comeback from 2-0 down in the recent Rays series must have given them a shot of confidence moving forward and the series victory over Cleveland has also helped. If Chris Sale can stay in form and deadline arrival Kyle Schwarber can keep hitting runs, the Red Sox might just be the best challenger for the Rays in terms of power rankings.

New York Yankees

If you were drawing up these power rankings a few weeks back, you could have made a case for the Yankees being at number one. Until August 28, they enjoyed an amazing 13-game winning streak and were in top form. Since then, though, they have lost six of their last eight games. This has hit their ranking and could see their postseason chances disappearing. A recent 8-7 series loss to the Orioles plus disappointment against the Angels was not helpful, to say the least.

In addition, the Andrew Heaney experiment in the bullpen just seems not to be working. Jordan Montgomery has shown good form, though, and it could be up to players like him to get the Yankees back to their winning ways. Although they were starting to climb the power rankings, recent events have put them back down below the Rays and Red Sox again. At least, with Derek Jeter’s entry into the MLB Hall of Fame recently, Yankees fans have one reason to smile!

AL East is an exciting division to follow

Although the current power rankings for AL East see the Rays in top spot, this is still a division with lots left to play for. Both the Red Sox and Yankees may sit behind Tampa in the ratings currently but this can still change before the end of the season. The Yankees poor current form suggests this may be beyond them but you should not put it past Boston to make a late charge on the side from Tampa.
