December 1st was a day dreaded by all baseball fans for the past few months. The inevitable work stoppage began on Wednesday night forcing the teams to stop negotiations with MLB’s free agents.
Yet, the work stoppage will stop at some point and there are a few elite free agents still without a team. Let’s make a few predictions of where they end up when baseball resumes.
Carlos Correa: Los Angeles Dodgers
The elite shortstop needs a home with a ton of money and the Dodgers seem to be the ideal candidate.
Correa can fill Corey Seager’s hole at shortstop and take the Dodgers back to the World Series. There may be some slight hesitation from the Dodgers players to accept Correa as one of their own, but the talent is incredible and he will make the Dodgers a better team.
Kris Bryant: San Francisco Giants
The super-utility man and elite bat helped lead the Giants to a division title after coming over from Chicago at the deadline.
The Giants have been in the mix with several big name free agents, showing their willingness to spend this offseason. Why not bring Bryant back and make another run at the World Series?
Freddie Freeman: Atlanta Braves
Freddie Freeman back to Atlanta seemed to be a lock before the season. The Yankees and Dodgers have started to muddy the waters with reported offers to the longtime Braves first baseman.
I still think Freeman ends up back with the Braves on a six year deal. Freddie should not wear another uniform for the rest of his career, especially with how last season ended.
Trevor Story: Philadelphia Phillies
I like Story to the Phillies. Didi Gregorius was a bit of a flop at short for the Phillies last season and Story can bring a spark to Philadelphia.
The Phillies need to keep up with the rest of their division and its spending this offseason. Given the amount of money they have with the rest of their roster, it is clear that the Phillies intend to contend.
Story won’t receive the level of contract of Carlos Correa, which makes Philadelphia a good option.
Michael Conforto: Chicago White Sox
Maybe the easiest prediction of all, Conforto will be a member of the Chicago White Sox.
The Sox need a left-handed bat and a right fielder, making Conforto an obvious choice. The White Sox mash lefties with Jose Abreu, Luis Robert, and Eloy Jimenez. Conforto can complement those bats to take Chicago to another level.
Conforto’s poor ‘21 helps the cheap White Sox to put together a contract.
