Controversy aside, Carlos Correa is a really good baseball player. He plays a premium position on the diamond, he hits for power and contact, and he features a high baseball I.Q.
He is athletic and strong and would be a fan-favorite had he not been a part of a certain cheating scandal with his former team. Regardless, teams want to win and Correa is a player who can help them accomplish that goal. He has been on winning teams for the majority of his MLB tenure.
Today, we are going to look at four potential landing destinations for free agent shortstop, Carlos Correa.
The Astros have reportedly already made an offer to Correa. However, it was supposedly below his asking price. If Houston is unwilling to dish out more money that could spell the end of the relationship between Correa and the Astros.
Houston has shown a desire to spend money already this offseason. The organization recently inked Justin Verlander to a 1-year deal worth $25 million dollars. However, committing to Correa would not just mean a plethora of money, it would also mean paying him that large sum of money over multiple seasons.
The Astros are likely not interested in offering Correa that kind of contract. Still, there is a chance the market bottoms out and the star shortstop returns to Houston.
The Tigers have been the favorites to land Correa for quite some time now. Plenty of MLB experts have predicted that he will end up in Detroit.
The fit certainly makes sense, as the Tigers have a young up-and-coming pitching rotation and they have plenty of money to spend. Signing Correa would give them a veteran clubhouse presence and a leader on offense to take them to the next step in their rebuilding process.
Also, A.J. Hinch is the manager of Tigers. Hinch coached Correa in Houston and both were a part of the sign-stealing scandal. Both also enjoyed much success with one another.
Hinch alone might be enough motivation for Correa to take his talents to Michigan.
New York Yankees
Naturally, the Yankees are an option to land Correa. New York could use an upgrade at shortstop and they are always big-spenders. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has made it extremely clear that he wants to make adding a shortstop a priority this offseason.
However, a certain comment Correa recently made could realistically deter his chance of becoming a Yankee. Correa proclaimed that Yankee legend Derek Jeter did not deserve the Gold Gloves that he won over the course of his career. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, calling out Derek Jeter is not a surefire way to win over the Yankee’s organization and fanbase.
Despite the comments, the Yankees are still expected to pursue Correa.
This one may come as a surprise to most of you. However, the Phillies just missed out on the postseason a year ago and currently own one of the longer droughts of not making the playoffs in baseball. Philadelphia has an impatient fanbase so winning is going to be a top priority for 2022.
Of course, Bryce Harper is already earning himself a massive payday from the Phillies front office, so Philadelphia may be reluctant to pay Correa as well. But adding Correa to this lineup would give the team a leg up in a fairly weak National League East division.
The Phillies are the dark horse candidate to land Correa this offseason.
