Mets’ First Move

Mets' First Move

Change of Culture, change of president of baseball operations and change of GM, again.

Mets will go to this off-season with a lot of things to fix, but first they need a direction and that will be the primary thing under Steve Cohen’s new regime to watch this winter with a new PBO with Sandy Alderson leaving the role and the search of their fourth General Manager in four years; Brodie Van Wagenen(Fired), Jared Porter(SA scandal) and Zack Scott(DUI).

The candidates that sound the most in the streets of Flushing are Theo Epstein, Billy Beane and David Stearns(Current GM of the Milwaukee Brewers). Going from less likely to very likely to being the new PBO of the Mets for 2022 and beyond:

David Stearns

For starters the Mets to begin talks with Stearns they have to ask for permission from the Brewers; which they did last winter, but was denied, they will reach out again but I think they will be denied again.Stearns took the GM spot on November of 2015, with the Brewers finishing 4th in Central division with a 68-94 record, since then Brewers have made the postseason 4 times(18’,19’,20’ and 21)’.

He’s the less experienced of the list with 13 years on the business when he first started as an intern in 2008 with the Mets, he knows what trades to make the team from fringe to post-season contenders, with blockbuster trades like getting Christian Yelich, and underrated moves, with the trades of Willy Adames, Eric Lauer and Luis Urias(9.2 bWAR) and FA signings Avisail Garcia and Kolten Wong(6.4 bWAR).

Theo Epstein

The winner of 3 World Series with the Red Sox and the Cubs, ending the curse of the Bambino and the curse of Billy the Goat, since 2001 with a position as a GM intern with the Red Sox.He brings nothing but success with 15 seasons with a record over .500, sounds like the perfect candidate, but the desire to win another WS isn’t Epstein’s priority right now since being hired by the MLB as a consultant for “on-field matters”.

Recent reports by Jon Heyman, that he’s happy with his current role at MLB and Mets haven’t had any contact with him yet, but he’s open to talks. Billy Beane, the veteran in this list, creator of ‘’Moneyball’’, friends with Sandy Alderson, specialist of working with low-budget, 11 postseason appearances since taking the A’s in 1997 after departure of Sandy Alderson.

Beane is top priority by the Mets in this moment with his relationship with Alderson and intriguing to Cohen because of his reputation as a disrupter and innovator, and specialist with tight budgets, now that Mets have a bunch of players leaving for free agency; Stroman, Syndergaard, Conforto, to name a few.

The Mets are expected to blow the luxury tax this year after another disappointing season so an experienced GM with tight budgets and a winning resume makes the most sense.
