Importance of series
This series is important because before the start of this series the Mets were only 1.5 games ahead of the Braves for first place in the NL East. This division rivalry sets a tone for each team for the rest of the season.
The Mets started the season many games ahead of every team in the NL East, however, the former World Series Champions, the Atlanta Braves have become one of the hottest teams in baseball at this point in the season. The Braves have one of the best offenses as they are second in the league in total home runs with 123.
For game one of the Mets Vs Braves Series, both teams decided to start it off by pitching their best healthy pitchers. The Mets pitcher Max Scherzer, who had just come back from injury, pitched his second game for the Mets since the injury.
Scherzer was sidelined for 6-8 weeks with a high-grade oblique strain which put a slow down to the Met’s ridiculously hot start to the season. Sherzer has pitched a total of 7 games going 6-1, including the Monday night game, putting up an ERA of .215, with 79 total strikeouts, and a WHIP of .83.
The Atlanta Braves decided to pitch Max Fried who after last night’s game has a record of 9-3 in 12 total games pitched. The pitcher has an ERA of 2.56, 105 total strikeouts, and a WHIP of 1.07.
First Team to strike
It was not until the 3rd inning that either team scored with the Mets striking first. The Mets were able to score thanks to Pete Alonso hitting a double to left field, allowing Brandon Nimmo to score, creating a 1-0 lead for New York. They were not done just yet as they managed to score a second run this inning. Guillorme grounded into a fielder’s choice allowing Pete Alonso to score from 3rd base.
Up until the 7th Inning, Scherzer only gave up 3 hits and did not allow a run to score with 9 total strikeouts in his second game back from injury.
In Scherzer’s last inning of pitching, he gave up a home run to Austin Riley allowing the Braves to cut the Mets’ lead in half.
However, the Mets were able to answer as Guillorme managed to homer to the right field, giving the Mets a 3-1 lead. Later that inning Pete Alonso was able to get an RBI to allow Nimmo to score for the second time. The Mets now took a commanding 4-1 lead heading into the 9th inning.
To ensure their win the Mets decided to bring in their best closer in Edwin Diaz. Diaz was electric on the mound, closing out the game with three straight strikeouts and earning the save. This series will continue to go down as one of the most important series of the season for both teams.
