MLB Saturday Storylines

MLB Saturday Storylines: I like to call the first Saturday of the MLB Season “Opening Day Part Two.” There are more games today than there were on Thursday. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the fantastic slate of games that will be displayed all over national television. Here are the MLB Saturday storylines that you need to know for today’s games.

1:05 PM ET: Toronto Blue Jays (Stripling) vs. New York Yankees (Kluber)
The Blue Jays narrowly won the first game of this series on Opening Day, taking down Yankees’ ace Gerrit Cole. Corey Kluber gets the ball for the Yankees today in his New York debut. He is 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA in four career starts in the Bronx, but this will be the first time he pitches in pinstripes.

1:10 PM ET: Baltimore Orioles (Harvey) vs. Boston Red Sox (Houck)
The Matt Harvey redemption tour begins today. Harvey has not been good since the beginning of his career with the Mets. He has a 5.85 ERA in the past three seasons with four different teams. The Red Sox only collected two hits yesterday, so Harvey has a good chance of generating some outs.
1:10 PM ET: Cleveland Indians (Plesac) vs. Detroit Tigers (Teheran)
Zach Plesac will look to give the Indians their first victory of the season. The Tigers bested Cleveland on Opening Day because of a Miguel Cabrera home run in the snow. Shane Bieber was terrific, but his one mistake cost the Indians against one of the worst teams in baseball.

2:10 PM ET: Texas Rangers (Arihara) vs. Kansas City Royals (Minor)
The Rangers and Royals combined for 24 runs on Opening Day. Are the offenses that good, or is the pitching just that bad? I tend to believe that it’s because of a lack of pitching.

2:20 PM ET: Pittsburgh Pirates (Anderson) vs. Chicago Cubs (Arrieta)
Can the Pirates beat the Cubs again? Chicago looked lifeless on Opening Day at Wrigley Field. Jake Arrieta, who is not the pitcher of the past, will get the ball today. The 35-year-old had a 4.08 ERA in 17 2/3 exhibition innings this spring, so there is hope for the veteran.

4:05 PM ET: Atlanta Braves (Morton) vs. Philadelphia Phillies (Wheeler)
Bryce Harper’s Philly Phanatic cleats stole the show on Opening Day, and the Phillies’ walk-off win sealed the deal for a perfect start to the season in the City of Brotherly Love.

4:07 PM ET: Houston Astros (McCullers) vs. Oakland Athletics (Irvin)
Lance McCullers Jr. will be making his first start since signing a five-year contract worth $85 million. The Astros started the season with a win, and they are expecting their future ace to deliver in game two. Expect more boos for Houston at the Oakland Coliseum today.

4:10 PM ET: St. Louis Cardinals (Wainwright) vs. Cincinnati Reds (Mahle)
Can Adam Wainwright continue his Spring Training dominance in the regular season? The St. Louis offense looked fantastic on Opening Day with the addition of Nolan Arenado, so expect another big day from the Cards.

6:10 PM ET: Tampa Bay Rays (Hill) vs. Miami Marlins (Hernandez)
This is one of my favorite MLB Saturday storylines of the day. Rich Hill had his driver’s license before Elieser Hernandez came out of the womb. That’s all you have to know about this game.

7:10 PM ET: Minnesota Twins (Berrios) vs. Milwaukee Brewers (Burnes)
Jose Berrios recorded a 4.00 ERA in 2020, but he has made many mechanical adjustments in the offseason. The Twins think he could become one of the best number two pitchers in the American League in 2021.

8:10 PM ET: Los Angeles Dodgers (Buehler) vs. Colorado Rockies (Gray)
If David Price stays in the bullpen, the Dodgers should beat the Rockies. Price gave up back-to-back home runs in his Dodger debut last night. Is it too late for a player to opt out?

8:40 PM ET: Arizona Diamondbacks (Smith) vs. San Diego Padres (Musgrove)
The Padres have not looked great against the Diamondbacks, but they have won both contests to start the year. Joe Musgrove, who was born and raised in the greater San Diego area, is making his debut tonight for his hometown team.

9:07 PM ET: Chicago White Sox (Lynn) vs. Los Angeles Angels (Cobb)
The Angels beat the White Sox 4-3 on Opening Day. A big reason for this success was Justin Upton. Upton had a big two-out RBI on Thursday to propel the Angels to an Opening Day victory.

9:10 PM ET: San Francisco Giants (Webb) vs. Seattle Mariners (Flexen)
Do not count out the M’s. The Giants and the Mariners have split the first two games of this series. Logan Webb will pitch for San Francisco, and Seattle’s batters have owned him in the past.
