Joey Meneses Ramirez, a 30-year-old professional baseball player, currently plays for the Washington Nationals. He is traditionally a first baseman, but can also play outfield as well.
From 2011-2018, Meneses played for two MLB farm systems, including the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies. In 2018 with the Phillies Triple-A affiliate Lehigh Valley Ironpigs, Joey won the International League MVP.
Finally, Joey made his professional debut for and played for the Orix Buffaloes in the Nippon Professional Baseball league in 2019. With the Buffaloes that year, he batted .206 with 4 home runs and 14 RBIs.
He then decided to give his MLB dream another try with the Boston Red Sox minor leagues in 2020. Following a brief stint with them, he signed a minor league deal with the Washington Nationals. Joey’s career up to this point has been a wild one, but he has finally broken through in the big leagues.
Joey’s MLB Career
Joey Meneses made his MLB debut for the Washington Nationals on August 2nd, 2022. His first year in the big leagues was historic, and will certainly be one to remember for Joey for the rest of his life.
For his first major league hit, Meneses hit a homer against the New York Mets off of Yoan Lopez. Two games later, Joey started an eleven game hitting streak where he put up a tremendous line, batting .354 with 7 home runs through just twenty five major league games.
Under a month later, Joey hit his first walk-off homer against the Oakland Athletics, which ironically was also the first walk-off win for the Nationals that season. He finished his rookie MLB season batting .324 with 13 home runs and 34 RBIs, and was named to the MLB Pipeline All-Rookie Team.
It is safe to say that Joey Meneses started his MLB career with a bang. The best part of it all, it came when he was thirty years old.
On a Tear for Team Mexico
Following this impressive rookie season for Joey Meneses, he was given the invitation to play for Team Mexico, which he gracefully accepted. Thus far, this decision has been a great one not only for Joey, but for Team Mexico and their success in the WBC.
As for Team Mexico, following a 2023 WBC opening loss to Colombia, they have rattled off three straight wins against the US Team, Team Great Britain, and Team Canada. They convincingly beat the loaded lineup of the US Team 11-5, edged Great Britain 2-1, and again convincingly beat Canada 10-3.
The obvious catalyst to this effort would be star outfielder Randy Arozarena. However, the bat of Joey Meneses has been superb as well.
In this year’s WBC, Joey Meneses is batting .474 with two home runs and six RBIs. As it stands now, Joey also leads the WBC in hits with nine. Both of his home runs, as well as five of his RBIs, came against Team USA in the 11-5 defeat of the red, white, and blue.
Given his impressive stats so far for Team Mexico, Joey will be a guy they turn to down the stretch. As for the Washington Nationals, you can bet that they are watching very closely on his play as he vies for a spot in their starting lineup in the 2023 season.
