According to DraftKings, the Houston Astros are currently the favorites to win the American League pennant, sitting at +225 odds, and this couldn’t be any more wrong. Meanwhile, the Chicago White Sox currently are sitting at +275 and should be below every team in the AL as of right now.
They have been the better team post all-star break with 13 wins, compared to the Astros 11. With two of those wins coming against the Astros the weekend right after the break. Sitting at a 67-46 record, they have proved to their doubters that they will not let injuries derail their season, or faze them in the slightest bit.
The Chicago White Sox have been absolutely on fire to start the month of August, only dropping 2 games in 10 days of action. With a series sweep against their cross-town rivals, the Cubs, they head into this week with a ton of momentum.
With an emphatic 11-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Monday night, they showed their incredible form as of late and why they should be the favorites to win the pennant.
Eloy Jimenez was the star tonight again as he hit two home runs for the 2nd consecutive game, making him the first player in franchise history to have 2 home runs and 5 RBIs in consecutive games. But not to overshadow the rest of the team’s performance, SS Tim Anderson also had consecutive blasts, as he hit his 2nd straight lead-off home run to start the game.
Lucas Giolito was exceptional on Monday night after getting knocked around by the Royals earlier last week. He went eight innings, allowing one run and two hits while striking out eight batters.
The highlight of the night, however, was the return of the young electric superstar Luis Roberts for the White Sox. Roberts was put on the 60-day IL after suffering an injury early in May. He resumed baseball activities last month and was eased back into the starting lineup for the White Sox. His return was long-awaited and well worth it as he finished the night 2 for 5 with 1 RBI.
As of right now, the White Sox stand 10.5 games above the second-place Cleveland Indians and will win the division without a doubt. The only thing that is in question for the White Sox is where they will be playing in the playoffs this year. They are currently the 2nd seed right now, which is good enough to get them in the ALDS against the 3rd placed Houston Astros.
But I expect them to edge out the Tampa Bay Rays over this next month and gain sole possession of the 1st seed. The 1st seed would grant them the ability to play the winner of the Wild Card game, which will most likely be between the Red Sox and the Athletics.
This team was dangerous at the start of the season before the injuries, and now that these star players are getting back to baseball and being healthier, this team will be extremely dangerous in October. Their pitching staff has been electric all season, and with the addition of Craig Kimbrel, they now have the deadliest bullpen in the American League, if not the entire MLB. With extreme power and speed at the plate, they pose a threat to any and all defenses as well.
If they hit their strides and head into the playoffs with some momentum, I really think that they could be playing in the fall classic at the end of October. They have all the personnel and coaching to take them the distance, and it’s just a matter of execution at this point.
