Yankees Going All-in In Potentially Aaron Judge’s Last Season In The Bronx

Yankees

The New York Yankees did their trade deadline work early on Monday as they landed multiple impact players as they look to win their 28th World Series. The Yankees currently have the best record in baseball as they are 70-34 – after Monday’s win, and earlier in the day New York did a ton of work to improve their roster which is big given Aaron Judge is a free agent and could leave this off-season.

First, New York added reliever Scott Effross from the Chicago Cubs who has a funky delivery and is under team control through 2027. The right-hander is 1-4 with a 2.66 ERA this season worth 0.8 WAR but adding to the bullpen was a major need for the Yankees who will be without Chad Green and Michael King for the rest of the season while Zach Britton is still out.

Yankees get starting depth

The Yankees didn’t stop there, either as just a few hours later it was announced they had acquired starting pitcher Frankie Montas and reliever Lou Trivino.

Montas is the key here as the right-hander was sought after by multiple teams – including New York’s AL East rival Toronto Blue Jays. The righty is 4-9 with a 3.18 ERA and although he is more of a middle-of-the-rotation starter that is exactly what the Yankees needed.

Currently, New York’s rotation is Gerrit Cole, Jordan Montgomery, Jameson Taillon, Nestor Cortes, and Domingo German while Luis Trevino is out with an injury. German since coming back from injury has struggled, Taillon has a 5.36 ERA while Cortes is nearing his career high in innings and is starting to give up harder contact and no longer dominating hitters as he was earlier this season.

With that, adding to the rotation was a must given the question marks and although Montas was hurt earlier this year he will be solid for New York. In a best-of-five series, New York will be able to run out, Cole, Servino, Cortes, and Montas which could be as good as any rotation, and the starters don’t even have to be dominant with how good the Yankees’ offense is.

The other part of the trade is Lou Trivino who has struggled out of the bullpen as he has a 6.47 ERA in 2022 but there is hope the Yankees pitching staff can help fix him. He will get low-leverage innings to start but there is hope he can turn it around, but even if he doesn’t, New York needed arms in the bullpen and to give them innings.

New York adds Benintendi

The Yankees also acquired outfielder Andrew Benintendi before the deadline to replace Joey Gallo. Benintendi has struggled so far with New York but it is expected he will turn it around.

Regardless, New York is in a good spot to continue their phenomenal 2022 season and is now built for a serious playoff push with their new pitching additions to lock down games in the playoff as they chase another World Series ring in what could be the last time they can with Judge on the team.
